Hello 2013

I saw this on a friends Facebook page and I thought... why not give it a whirl....

One Word
In giving some thoughts to goals and resolutions for this shiny new year, I decided to pick a word to live by this year. I am choosing 'gratitude'. We are encouraged, even commanded, in scripture to give thanks in all things and I realize that although my faith is strong and I trust God to care for me, to meet my needs and to bring me plans for good and not for harm, I am still not always fully aware and appreciative of all that I have. I don't always have an attitude of gratitude.

In the face of disappointments and challenges, remaining grateful can be trying at times. It will be good for me to find something each and every day to be thankful for. And not just thankful for the good things, but, pardon my Pollyanna, to find a reason to be grateful even in the things that are negative. Yah... I guess I like a challenge.

Today I am grateful for.... heat. It's darn chilly out!! But wow, what a spectacular view when the sunshine hits the frost!!

What I want:
To spend more time with family, especially those who live far away. I want to celebrate my next birthday with my sister (and it doesn't have to be in December) I want to visit my daughter and family again. For Christmas would be AWESOME!!!! I'd like to visit my brother and sister-in-law in Montana... maybe this summer.

What I need:
this is a good question to ask ourselves every once in awhile. Especially if preceded with "really".  What do I REALLY need?
Good health.
to be kinder
to slow down and appreciate the moment... (be grateful in it!)
A few close relationships. God and  Husband tops that list.
food, clothing, shelter.
simple really....

What I will share:
the Light of Jesus Christ. In word, in deed. The HOPE that lives within me.

What I will succeed in this year:
I hope I will be successful in accomplishing my list! I'd like to memorize more scripture and be more proficient (confident) in having an answer for the hope that lives within me.

What about you? What are your goals, dreams, aspirations and resolutions for 2013? Whatever you pursue, I wish you success.

Good Bye 2012

thinking about 2012..... what we did....  thinking about 2013.... and what we will do....

we loved~ we laughed~ we lived. It was a full year of blessings.

You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.
Duet. 5.33
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you,
may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Happy New Year Friends!!

Quiet on the Home Front

a day for cleaning... and reflecting.

Suitcases unpacked and put back in storage waiting for the next adventure

laundry mounds piled high, how did we generate so much in just 3 days?

kitchen whipped back into shape, awaiting tomorrows turkey-fest.

a happy cat tucked into the chair beside me, purring contentedly at my return

fire crackling, dust bunnies settling, lists of things to do in preparation for tomorrows holiday.

turkey, pumpkin pie, all the trimmings

family will gather, small and intimate

and we will take time to pause... and reflect...

on all that we have, all that God has given us.

thankful in so many ways, blessed beyond measure.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL MY LOVELY FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Happy Birthday America!!

This is the day we gather with family or friends or both and stuff our faces with food, play games, sit and visit and stuff our faces some more.

right?

or not. there have been a few of these holidays where we stayed home and kind of ignored the fact it was a Holiday. We're doing that tonight, although there is NO WAY to IGNORE it with bombs and blasts going off all around us!!

We had a pleasant afternoon gathering with friends at their home, stuffing our faces with food, playing games, visiting and stuffing our faces some more. It's the American Way!!

My contribution to the BBQ/potluck  was baked beans and Snicker Salad. What is snicker salad? Oh my it's super easy and super good!!! You need Cool Whip, Instant Pudding (almost any flavor will work, but I favor vanilla or cheesecake) apples and snicker bars. Mix the instant pudding with 1 cup of milk, fold in the cool whip. Add diced up red apples, (4-6) and 3-5 snicker bars. Mix it all well and serve! (this doesn't keep well overnight so best to make the day of-- and trust me-- there won't be left overs!!)

other tasty offerings at today's gathering were a bevy of fruits and veggies in salad form, and grilled trout with a creamy dill sauce on one and a chili-lime sauce on the other. yummmers!! also grilled hamburgers spiced up with chili, and topped with smoked gouda.

yes. i sampled them all. yes, i have heart burn....

it was a great afternoon... I'm a little sorry we aren't going to watch any fireworks tonight-- especially since we have such beautiful weather this year. But, I am happy to curl up with some tea and a book. And occasionally peek out the window and see what displays the neighbors have.
Happy Independence Day!

love me some tall timber

take me to the car!! (note some of us use suitcases, some of us prefer the catch all basket!!)
tall timber's calling....

google 'sons of the pioneers' and you might find this classic old song. I know they are talking more about going to the woods and not really specifically OUR Tall Timber but it still makes me feel soooooo nostalgic for this special camp.

anyway, we are almost packed. Hubby is running last minute-got- to-take-care-of-things-before-we-can-leave-town- stuff which gives me a minute to sit down, catch my breath, check my list and sip another cup of coffee.... Oh, and BLOG!! Ha Ha.

I am  super excited to be taking some newbies with us to camp. Always love introducing this place to folks who've never been before. It is going to be a fantastic weekend, with good weather, good food, good people and our good good God!

internet is spotty at camp so we'll see if I am able to post anything whilst there. Otherwise, wishing everyone a spectacular Memorial Weekend!

Just for Fun

We made it through another week! Bruce survived the gunshot wound to his knee (nail gun) and kept his job. I survived looking after him, and keeping things humming. Yay God!
He is still a little gimpy with the stiff knee and will continue his antibiotics but he's doing good. He reports to work Monday in the office to continue the work they assigned him (to do at home) of putting an estimate together on an upcoming project.

We're having a get together with dear friends tonight. 2 couples we were in a small group with for a long long time. One of the couples are missionaries, home on furlough from Honduras. Quite unintentionally the get together is falling on St. Patrick's Day but I decided to have a green theme for dinner!

In addition to a GREEN Salad, I am making the cauliflower pizza crust for dinner with PESTO SAUCE and grilled chicken, ARTICHOKES, GREEN PEPPERS and other yummy toppings. SPINACH DIP for the chips, LIME JELLO with shredded BROCCOLI slaw mix and while I didn't find GREEN BEER, I DID find Hard Cider made from Granny Smith apples which everyone knows are GREEN!! for dessert there are brownies with..... MINT ice cream, (provided the Quick Stop next door has it in stock-- I forgot to get some when I stopped for pesto sauce)
All for fun of course!!

Even more fun is the news that I WON a give away on this awesomely shiny blog. I am going to receive a CD from A Fine Pair of Misfits which is the self titled first album of her daughter and son-in-law. Very talented sweet couple and I have seen them perform in public and enjoyed all their fine songs.

it's been a good week. and then.....  to top things off..... We got these adorable pictures  of our youngest grandchild just in time for St. Paddy's Day. Too Cute!!

Big Bennett Burke looking flashy in his fine bowtie and special glasses.

this one is my favorite!

you think maybe he knows just how cute he is?

happy St. Patricks Day!

It's How You Look At It That Matters

I got a pretty sweet valentine's gift from my husband this year. You have to understand that we don't really "DO" Valentines. Hubby thinks it's a 'hallmark contrived holiday' and while I long for roses, chocolate or other romantic expressions of love, I would prefer to get those for surprise occasions rather than thru a 'hallmark contrived holiday'. So, when he DOES surprise me with a gift of something on Valentines Day, I take notice!

I am a romantic at heart. We celebrate our wedding anniversary EVERY MONTH on the 28th. We were married on the 28th of September and every month it's a little contest to see who says 'happy month-a-versary' first! We celebrate the anniversary of our engagement, and our first date. I even remember the first time we exchanged "I love you's" and like to celebrate that one too. And, remember my primary love language is touch, so I like those hugs, kisses and foot massages or other loving pats of affection! BUT thankfully, since hubby doesn't speak fluent 'touch' (his is words of affirmation) we BOTH have a common secondary love language. Acts of Service.

If I get up in the morning and he has made the coffee..... sometimes even going as far as to set out my mug with cream already in it.... well, the man has just scored points!! Little things like washing my car or fueling it for me, carrying dishes to the sink and loading them into the dishwasher, helping me with putting on my jacket.... those kinds of things I take notice of-- and appreciate!

So last night was great! He says I am too easy on him but really, this was a very sweet gesture. Every Tuesday we drive to Lynden together, with the church van, carrying a load of church family to attend Dream School and The Fire. Well, the Fire was canceled this week so the men could spend Valentines with their sweeties. However, the Dream School Director didn't get that memo, lol, and so we had class. I was driving home last night after a long day which included a morning at Curves, a day with my mom and then a stop at the Plasma center to donate and all I could think of as I drove home was how tired and hungry I was. I did NOT want to go any further than my BED.

So when I walked in the house and grabbed something to eat and Bruce came in the kitchen and asked if he could drive me to class tonight... well my heart just melted. I was as thrilled as I was grateful.  He drove the van and sat in on class and winked at me from across the room on numerous occasions. (flirt!) I felt cherished and protected and that goes a long way in feeding me. Sigh. what a guy!

Hope you all had a wonderful valentine's day as well.....

Mistakes Allowed

You read that right. there wasn't a NO in front of that. This is my big fat new years resolution this year; I am allowed to make mistakes.

Does that sounds silly?

Well, here's the reasoning behind this. too often I make a goal (for example: lose 10 15 ok, 20 pounds) and as soon as I do something to derail the goal (like consume 5 lbs in chocolates) I have a tendency to throw the whole goal out the window (saying "oh well, I'm just destined to be a chocoholic with a really big butt!!")

However!

This new goal allows me to make a mistake, not let it completely derail me, and move on. If it's diet we're talking, I just cut me some more chocolate cake slack and get back with the wise and healthy meal plan.

The Second however is that my goals are less about (weight) loss as they are about GAINING. Yes, gaining. Things like Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self Control.....
and self esteem. Still working on that seeing myself the way God sees me concept.

And when I make a mistake, instead of berating myself and giving up, I will allow myself the grace that God so freely gives, and move forward once again.

The Second Resolution I am making was inspired by our pastor on Sunday. He said "Don't make God your #1 priority" (that stopped us all in our tracks as you can imagine!) he went on to say "Instead make Him the CENTER of your life."

so often, we make a plan to be more focused on God being #1 in our lives but as soon as we worry about some other area God slips off the numero- uno position.  If I put God in the center of everything, there is no list for him to fall off of.

I have been giving that some thought. I was visualizing the list where its goes something like
1. God
2. family
3. work
4. others
and so on. And then, I visualized tearing up the list and making a circle instead. the circle represents my life and with Christ at the center, everything else just seems to fall into place.

So, Mistakes are allowed this year and God isn't going at the top of my list. Instead, He goes where He has always longed to be. In the center of my life. In the center of my heart.

Happy New Year!

Full Tummy; Full Heart

Ah, Thanksgiving.

Did I ever tell you this is my favorite Holiday? What is it about this holiday that makes it stand out from all the rest? Perhaps it is the time of year that makes it special, since Fall happens to be my favorite season. Perhaps it is the smells emanating from the kitchen (glorious aroma of roasting turkey, spicy pumpkin pies, wafting scent of hot cider) or the sight of a beautiful table setting. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that this holiday has not been turned into a retail nightmare, mixed up with Santa or Easter Bunnies or the like. No, it's just a true day of being thankful.
Simple.
Pure.
Sweet.

True, we 'ran away' for the official day but it's not the actual day that matters, it's how you decide to celebrate it. And celebrate it we did.

Thank goodness for a church fellowship hall to fit us all in to. 18 in all... (19 if you count Fergie the dog. and since she did an adequate job if sweeping up the crumbs under the table I guess she does)  I think one of the best part of the gathering yesterday for me was seeing  our families-- mine, Bruce's and 2 of our best couple/friends all gathered together in one place to celebrate. I don't know how many couples combine their families together for an occasion other than weddings and birthdays. Usually we split things like, Christmas Eve with my family, Christmas Day with yours but Bruce and I like to shake things up a bit I guess.

It helps that there has already been a bit of integrating done between our families over the years. And that we are all pretty easy going and flexible.

After the usual time of social mingling as the last of the food was prepared, and waiting for the last person to arrive, we stood in a circle and each shared a bit. To make it fun, Bruce suggested that we each tell one thing we were thankful for and then tell how we were related to, or knew, Baby Bennett (his first thanksgiving)

Both exercises were fun! It was especially funny to watch some of the folks trying to figure out how they were related to Bennett. Since Bennetts' daddy is my stepson, my brother was trying to figure out the relation. "Am I his great uncle or am I a cousin? (correct answer: great uncle)

One of the most common thing we expressed thankfulness for was family and friends, which was exactly why we had planned this gathering. Although I had to admit I was really thankful for the use of the church for the day since it meant I didn't have to stress out over cleaning my house or figuring out how to make room for us all!!

We enjoyed a fine meal and then after some cleaning up we settled in the worship center and Bruce shared the powerpoint presentation of his trip to Japan. And passed around candy and other treats he had brought home with him. Have you ever had cola gum? Gum with a fizzy coka-cola center? Very interesting!

It was a really lovely evening and I think everyone had a good time. I know I did (and usually large gatherings wear me down) But instead, I came home with a full tummy and a full heart. And truth be told, I think my heart was the fullest of the two.

Tomorrow...

will be our Thanksgiving Gathering with family and friends. We'll gather in the fellowship hall of the Deming Community (formerly Presbyterian) Church where we will all be able to fit at the long tables lined up and decorated. There will be turkey and the trimmings and lots of laughter and love. We'll eat pie and look at pictures (finishing up the power point of Bruce's trip tonight!!) and hear all about Bruce's adventure in Japan. We'll have grandma and a baby and everyone in between. And afterwards everyone will help with clean up.

hey, it's my fantasy.

Happy Camping!

We left around noon under dark wet skies, heading West... believing the famed 'banana belt' region would provide us a few rays of sunshine...
coming into Keystone Ferry Landing we were rewarded with this picturesque view!
 and the promised sunshine!
As we came around the corner into Fort Casey, our breath was taken away with this amazing scene, complete with grazing deer!

looking out at the Fort-- or what is known as "the Batteries"
to the West is Port Townsend
At the north end of the Fort/Park is the lighthouse. We came back to explore this the last day of our get away.

the campground is located right next to the Ferry Landing so we were able to see, hear (and smell) the ferries coming and going all day.... and late into the evening.

We took a walk after supper, enjoying the nippy night air and the sights and sounds.

We had to check out the hours at the Keystone Cafe-- it was closed until Friday-- but it was a good place for a little photo op with the ferry in the background.

during the night we heard the wind pick up and the rain began and the next day-- thanksgiving day-- we huddled inside the camper all morning, sipping HOT coffee, reading books and talking.
Eventually, feeling a little stir crazy, we rousted ourselves into the wild and wooly wetness for a walk....

a walk that was guaranteed to burn calories in preparation for our turkey day meal...

because every step was an uphill battle as the wind was FIERCE!!!
It was hilarious actually...

we staggered against the wind like a couple of drunks!

If you think walking against the wind is hard, try doing it when you're laughing so hard you can hardly stand up!

Once we got over the hill and down in the battery area, the wind wasn't beating us quite so hard. The view was outstanding and worth the climb, the wind and the rain.
I remember coming here as a child and exploring the catacombs of the old fort. I remember my cousins hiding in dark corners and jumping out and scaring my sister and me spitless!
 Thankful for rain gear!!

it wasn't so much cold really. But my face got a whipping despite the efforts to guard it.

We finished our rounds of the fort just as the rain drops got fatter and closer between.

still, despite the wooliness of the day, it was so beautiful!

Here's a great picture of the campground. Literally right on the beach. What a great summer time destination!

I laugh at this picture; our cute little camper nestled amongst all the big luxurious RV's.
Still, we were comfy and happy!
Our Thanksgiving Dinner,
devoured with much gratitude as the wind picked up and battered our little home away from home all night long.

Crash and ... ZzzZzzzzzzzzzzz

foggy head, sleepy eyes, fuzzy brain... heavy limbs, achy limbs, am I coming down with something?

the whole day yesterday felt weird! I had ZERO patience for a day with my mom who had a Dr's appt or I might have been tempted to re-schedule time with her. I was sleepy, tired, achy and grumpy. I couldn't think clearly.

I forced myself to make a quick trip through the grocery store because otherwise there would be an even longer list of things to do today-- and the list is long enough already-- and when I got home I came in the house and asked Bruce to unload the car for me. I stayed up long enough to put away the food that needed refrigerating and then I crawled under the blankets of my bed and was out!

because I often have insomnia I eventually then have a day where it will catch up with me. but I was so achy all over that I questioned what was really going on. it did feel like a flu- attack... and though I hated to miss out on school last night, I also knew I would be worthless as a table leader... and if I was coming down with something, no one would want my company anyway. So, I snuggled deeper under the covers and snoozed on.

From 4pm yesterday until 9 am this morning... with a couple of nature calls in between-- now that is what I call a NAP!

The list for today is long, really long as both Bruce and I have a ton of stuff to do as part of getting him ready to leave on Monday! So am I sure glad I woke up feeling good.

Because this is the month of November and my favorite holiday is coming up, I created a little homemade decoration to help me count my blessings this year.

Each morning, Bruce and I will write down something we are thankful for on this poster. I am pretty sure 'coffee' will make the list. and SLEEP.

Labor Day

it  started out as a day to recognize the working force. Technically, it still is. But I think in our culture it has also become synonymous with the end of summer, the last hurrah before school starts in full force, before we prepare for fall weather... it's a time for family and picnics and maybe one last vacation while the weather is still nice. It is a kind of bittersweet time don't you think? Knowing summer is officially ending..... the evening shadows come a little sooner each day... creeping in like the tide, snatching up our pleasant evenings and replacing them with a sneaky chill in the air. Ah, summer, how we love thee!

But at the same time my heart rejoices because I truly LOVE autumn. September-October are my favorite months! I love-love-love the russet-goldenrod-crimson colors as they blaze across the mountains up above my town. We have a little road trip adventure planned for later this month and it is going to take us through some spectacular valleys where fall will be out in all her glory. I can't wait!!

But Labor Day. Back to Labor Day. I start thinking about the first 'real' job I ever held. Not the babysitting jobs, or the farm chores I participated in-- although those were important pieces in the overall picture of what it means to be responsible and earn money. No, the first REAL job was right after I graduated from high school. A job where I had to fill out the application, submit to an interview, wear a uniform and serve the public. Yep, my first job was, like so many other high school girls, Waitress.

It was in a little drive-in that has long since morphed into a full blown family dining establishment. But back in the day it was a Drive-In. The sort of place that cool kids cruised through on the  weekend, looking for other cool kids. The kind of place you pulled into with your car and picked up the phone and placed your order and the car hop brought it to you on a tray that attached to the rolled down window of your car. I did not wear roller skates, thank goodness-- I wasn't from THAT era! But between the car-hop service and counter service for inside dining, I got my first taste of experience with the public.
source: google images

I was terrified that first day! Scared of talking to strangers, unsure of how to make change, and no idea  for shorthand on the order slips. Oh, I am sure the other staff loved me. ;) I hung back just a tad, in my faded gold (butt-ugly) button up dress with white collar and cuffed sleeves, my little white apron stained and wrinkled. My dress itched and my feet were sore after only 2 hours of standing around learning the lay out of the kitchen, the storage area and the prep stations. I watched the assistant manager (a gal who was at least 6 months younger than me!) as she explained my duties and with shaky hands did my best to emulate her examples as we prepped food and stocked supplies.

The first time I took an order I stumbled over my words, simple as they were. ("May I take your order?") And eye contact? no way!!!I lost my place making change and could not for the life of me remember how to count back their money. I forgot to call out the order as I hung the slip up on the greasy cylinder over the food counter. I made so many mistakes and I was bone weary by the time my first shift ended. I was a wreck! The only time I sat down was when I went to use the bathroom and I wanted to stay there as long as I could! Laughing now over it, but back then it seemed like such a big deal!

This was the job that taught me about management and how it works, how sucking up could and did pay off, how quickly your co-workers could turn against you and what "flexible shifts" really meant: You must be flexible and work whatever shift they put you on at any given day. The schedule could and did, change each week. And getting a day off was a HUGE deal. You didn't just say "I need Friday off" and automatically expect to get it off... no, you better put in your request weeks in advance and consider it no small favor when your time off was granted.

I pretty much learned to hate management in that job. And not to trust my co-workers.

Still.... that first paycheck? That was both a thrill and a disappointment! I got paid!!! Yippeee!! Wait..... They took HOW MUCH out of my check????
And tips? Not on this job.

I lasted at this job about 4 or 5 months... and while it seems a life time ago that I worked there, those 5 months seemed endless when I was there. I've gone through a lot of jobs since that one. I did learn things in that job. Mostly about myself, even though I was too young and too messed up to really pay attention to what I was learning.

Today, this day, my labor day consists of blue skies and warm breezes, We don't have any picnics planned or mini-vacations. it's kind of like we were granted an extra Saturday this week.  My main responsibility today is keeping the hubby pumped about working in the wood shed and preparing for a visit later to see our grandson. It's an extra day of rest from a week of labor.

Whatever you are doing with this day, I hope it brings you refreshment. Have a blessed Labor Day.

Was That a Holiday?

When one of you is self employed and the other is unemployed, one of two things can happen: every day feels like a holiday, or every day feels like every other day. In the case of my husband, it's the latter, especially when work was nil for so long. Now he is busy-busy and there isn't time to mow the lawn, have a BBQ, plant a garden, or even fly a flag! He counts himself as extremely organized and fortunate when he still has time to sit and read his Bible before he leaves the house each day.

Unemployed (for right now) I can't claim to think each day feels like a Holiday but there certainly is a predominant spirit of procrastination enveloping me. It's much easier to let things slide because I have 'plenty of time' and can do 'that tomorrow'.

Maybe we've lost that Holiday Feeling (whoa--oh, that holiday feeling....)  maybe we never really had it. My memories from childhood about Holidays are fuzzy... what did we do on Memorial Day? Did we have picnics with family and friends? I grew up on a farm so the chores were always a part of the day no matter what else was going on. But we had time for family gatherings, outings to the mountains for hikes, lakes for swimming and there was usually a parade over the memorial weekend.

Raising kids, I was more in touch with the fact that a Holiday was upon us: no school for one thing! And we usually did get together with another couple, children in tow and spend an (often soggy) day grilling hot dogs and laughing over nothing much.

When I started dating Bruce, he was still very involved with Boy Scouts, as his son was a scout and Bruce , the scout master. Usually Memorial Day found us at the cemetery for a portion of the morning, where the scouts did a flag salute and a short ceremony was held. I can't think of anyone I have known personally that I have lost in a war, although I know many who have served. It was a very emotional and proud experience.

Yesterday was just a Monday in our house. Bruce needed that full day in the shop to get work done and I did the usual Monday things: laundry, list making for the week....  seems a little sad to have let the day go by and not have given much thought to what that day stands for.

Sometimes I think Holidays get viewed as inconveniences. Shoot, the store/bank/post office is closed... yesterday it was that the buses were not running on regular schedule which meant I had to make a run out to the other side of the county to pick up Bruce's brother, who doesn't drive, to bring him back here to work in the shop with Bruce. On the other hand I was relieved that the bank was closed and no checks would bounce as we needed gas in all the vehicles and the paycheck had not arrived yet. The phones would be quiet while the streets would echo with the sounds of people laughing; neighbors celebrating the day.

Still, as I drove through town and saw all the flags lining the streets,  unfurled in the breeze, my heart was stirred. I didn't feel sad that there wasn't any family BBQ happening, or that I had missed a parade or a Ski-to-Sea race or a visit to the cemetery. It didn't matter that Bruce was working and that my kids are all grown so school being closed didn't affect me. It was just a moment as I looked at all those flags.

I can't even identify what I was feeling in that heart stirred moment. Pride? Honor? Sentimental thoughts? Gratitude? Blessings? Maybe a smattering of all?

Maybe.

Today the phones will ring and the mail will come. Cars will shuttle past on the road and the town will be quieter as most folks have gone back to work. I have my list to attend to and today a check may bounce. A friend is coming over for coffee this afternoon and the sun is shining. A few flags are still up and I raise my cup... in gratitude for all the blessings of this life... noticed or forgotten.
