This, That and The Other Thing

this....
I'm taking a writing course!
The School of Creative Christian Writing, taught by Jeanne Halsey, is halfway through and I am being challenged both in thought and emotions. It's good and it has got me back into some writing. This is good! More on that another day. It's a lot to process!

that...
Speaking of writing...
The Christian Women Writers Group that I co-facilitate with my sister, has caught the attention of a friend who hosts a Podcast on FaithPlace. She has invited my sis and I to come be interviewed for her show as a way to encourage other women to start their own group! It will be a live interview. Little nervous about that! It's happening on May 5th on the Karolyn Merriman Show at 10 am. Since it's a podcast, you can catch the interview anytime.

Sparkling Over Here....
About 15 years ago I took a leap into the field of being an independent distributor for a jewelry company called Premier Designs. I had some fun for a few months but due to other things going on in my life, I kind of ran into a wall and let it go. My beautiful niece, who was responsible for recruiting me back then, has been with the company for more than 16 years and it's proved very profitable and rewarding for her. Every once in awhile she'd check in with me and ask if I'd ever consider coming back to rep the line. I'd say "thanks but no thanks" but then in February when she asked me again, it just seemed there was a definite nudge to really consider it. So, I took the leap again and resigned with Premier. I'm now a Jewelry Lady! I've always been impressed with the company and all it stands for and the jewelry is lovely. I've done my training show and have launched seemingly successfully. I am excited and see this as an opportunity to continue in a ministry to women. It's not about sales. It's about service and I was created to serve!  I'm still working one or two days a week at the Christian bookstore so this is a perfect compliment to my busy life.

and just a tad bit more..
We've been working on some remodeling in our kitchen. It's a work in progress but I'm pleased with the results thus far.
I'm looking forward to my grandson coming to visit this summer for a few weeks.
I'm eager to go camping and I'm loving longer days and warmer weather. The dark fog of winter has lifted and life is beautiful.

Life Goes On

This may be the longest break I've taken since I began blogging. I have to admit, upon my return from Florida, I fell into a funk. Sure, we can blame the depression (under control but always lurking) and certainly the awful sinus/upper respiratory infection that lingered for 6 weeks. But mostly, it was (is)  the pain of separation. Saying good bye is never easy. And the realization of just how much my grandkids have grown and changed since we visited in 2012 has had a very sobering effect. I've missed such a huge portion of their lives.

As I watched the days get gradually longer and the buds breaking forth on the trees and bushes, my spirits started to lift a bit.  The approach of spring will do that.

Next week my sweetie and I will take a little trip to the coast, visiting family and enjoying the Olympic Rain Forest and other hidden treasures. It will be great to get away and relax, play and have time together. Maybe this vacation will help chase away the blues and maybe even help restore my desire to write!

The Cherry On Top!

Life is so good!
My sweetie has been at the new job for over a week now and is doing just fine. There's a lot to learn and he comes home mentally exhausted but it's all good. We're taking it one day at a time and continuing to trust God. He's never failed us.

Life is so good!
Spring is just around the corner and with that comes a special celebration!

The first day of spring is.... (drum roll please) .... this Friday! We've been blessed with an exceptionally tame winter and spring-like weather has been teasing us for weeks now. There are buds and blossoms breaking out all around us and we've even mowed our lawn once! And just like spring, where new things blossom and grow, so it goes with the story of the love-burkes.  Our first date was on the first day of Spring 21 years ago this year!

If you have been following this blog for any length of time, or if you know me in real life, you know that I LOVE to celebrate! Birthdays, Anniversaries, milestones-- all worthy of a shout out!  When it comes to me n' my sweetie, it's no exception. I make no apologies for loving this man and letting the world know it. So, if you aren't interested in sharing in this celebration, just skip on over to your next favorite blog. No hard feelings.

To mark this years occasion I decided to put together a slideshow of pictures of us over the year as a surprise for my sweetie. It was hard to decide which pictures to include and which ones to pass on, so I ended up with a pretty lengthy presentation! It was a lot of fun to revisit the box of photos though! I found pictures I'd forgotten about (oh those days before we had digital!)

check out these young things!
the 80's called; they want their dress back!

I'm so glad we were able to work past the fear and trepidation we had about dating and risking our hearts for a new relationship. It was all worth it and the fact that we clicked, fell in love and ended up together has been the cherry on top!

One Year Later

Give or take a few days. I thought it was time for a check in/update/post script. A follow up to the Big D from last June. I know it is a cliche to say that it is hard to believe it's been a year since ______ (fill in the blank). But isn't that the way it always goes? Time just zips by, sometimes leaving a whiplash effect.

I look back over the past 12 months and feel grateful. Grateful for a full life and all the people in it. Grateful for church and family and my husband. Grateful for the area I live in, the experiences I have had and yep, even-- perhaps especially-- grateful for depression and the lessons it continues to teach me.

I'm sitting in my living room from where I have a great view of my back yard. I can see my deck with it's freshly painted patio furniture scattered around. The primary colors of the chairs and table cheer me to the very core.

I can see the planter boxes and pots filled with an array of flowers, all dancing happily in the breeze. Beyond the deck I see the wickets set up for a croquet game and the memory of this past weekend and some fun competition between friends makes me smile.

We've been blessed with a couple of weeks of delightful weather: sunshine almost every day with lots of gentle breezes to keep it from becoming too hot. It's been perfect weather for ice tea, gardening, reading books in patio chairs, sunscreen and sunglasses, shorts and flip-flops. But then, yesterday we woke up to heavy gray clouds that soon broke open with rain. Rain that cancelled some exciting plans for the day even as it nourished the plants and the lawn. It forced me to come up with a new plan for the day, or at the very least, a forgiving and accepting attitude about how this day was going to be played. This is exactly how it goes with depression.

My anti-depressants work well. I have many days of 'sunshine' and feeling full of energy and strength to tackle whatever may come. But there are still occasional days of feeling dragged low by emotional/mental dark clouds. What can I do but learn to roll with it. I have learned to read the signs, respect them and adjust my life accordingly, just as we do with our fickle pacific northwest weather. Even the heaviest days of rain hold a certain amount of beauty if we just look for it.

Perhaps that is one of the things about depression I am most grateful for. It has taught me to search harder for the happy that sometimes feels beyond reach. It has taught me that there is an inner strength that I did not know I had until I fought for it. It has taught me that it's okay to fall down and that when I fall it's also okay to just lay there for awhile and rest. But it has also emphatically taught me that eventually I must get up and press on. Depression has forced me to open up and let others in. It has made me dependent on God much more than anything else I have ever faced. It has taught me about being vulnerable and where to put my trust. Depression has also given me a deeper empathy to others who are in pain.

What depression has NOT done is robbed me of my joy. "Happiness is fleeting" and we often say happiness is a choice and we can choose to be happy. But joy is something that runs deeper. For me, the best way to summarize the difference between happiness and joy is that happiness tends to be an outward expression of elation where joy stems from a place of inward peace and contentment. Happiness is temporary based on outward circumstances. Joy is lasting, based on inward circumstances.  I can be happy because the sun is shining, but I have joy even when it rains because I know the Maker Of All Things Good.

Depression has taught me that Joy is possible even in the midst of my lowest moments. But I am grateful that the lowest moments are fewer and far between. The past year has been rough but it's also been good.

Psalm 30
1 I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me.
You refused to let my enemies triumph over me.
2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
    and you restored my health.
3 You brought me up from the grave,[a] O Lord.
You kept me from falling into the pit of death.
4 Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones!
    Praise his holy name.
5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime!
Weeping may last through the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
6 When I was prosperous, I said,
    “Nothing can stop me now!”
7 Your favor, O Lord, made me as secure as a mountain.
Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered.
8 I cried out to you, O Lord.
I begged the Lord for mercy, saying,
9 “What will you gain if I die,
if I sink into the grave?
Can my dust praise you?
Can it tell of your faithfulness?
10 Hear me, Lord, and have mercy on me.
    Help me, O Lord.”
11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.
You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,
12 that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!

Tiptoe Through the Tulips

Or not....

photo credit: Anita van der Elst

A year ago this month, before my sister moved here, she came to visit me for a week. We had plans to go to the Tulip Fesitval down in Skagit Valley but a nasty tumble down some concrete steps put that trip on hold for another day. (Another year actually.) Yesterday we finally got to go!

Roozengaard  Gardens is amazing. Let me say this again, Roozengaard Gardens is AMAZING. The month of April, when the tulips are at their peak, is of course the best time to visit. Acres and acres of beautiful, luscious, riotous colors! Tulips, Daffodills and in a short while, Iris',  tantalizing your eyes. It's almost overwhelming the sheer enormity and breathtaking beauty of the fields that stretch out in a rainbow of colors.

Wow. Just Wow.

Sister and I had a marvelous time and we snapped happily away all morning and into the afternoon. If you don't like tulips or care to look at pictures, please, just skip the rest of my post. Otherwise, prepare to be PHOTO BOMBED!!!  (I wont post them all~~~I'll save some for another post)

Enjoy!

stay tuned for more....

He Said "Yes"

I love it when things come together. When a plan I hatch, crazy as it may seem, doesn't scramble like eggs but rather sets up nicely, like pudding. And I do love to plan things. Much as I am a 'fly by the seat of my pants' girl, I also pay attention to details and plot out the arrangements for weeks in advance. But those impulsive last minute decisions are just plain fun. Dangerous perhaps, but FUN!

I think I've shared a bit about how the Love-Burkes came to be, but you know it's almost spring time when the memories and pictures start making their annual appearance! Our first date was on March 20, 1994-- 20 years ago this year!!- which is also the first day of Spring! I love that our love story coincides with the arrival of a new season... as the buds are busting out on the trees and blooms appear, so it was with the friendship between us that quickly progressed to love.

What you may not know is that I'm the one who asked him out. I'd been so stand-offish in the past several encounters we'd had, kind of leaving him with Freezer Burn, so when I suddenly began to thaw-- even melt, he was, not surprisingly, a wee bit suspicious and perhaps gun shy of thinking we might possible move into a relationship. I dropped some subtle hints that might prod him into asking me out but when that didn't seem to be yielding the results I wanted, I finally had to just get bold and do the asking.

You will laugh at this, but I actually scripted out what I was going to say once I got him on the phone. I wanted the conversation to be causal and non-threatening, just a "hey I was thinking of going to the movies this weekend, you wanna tag along" sort of invite. So, I wrote it out, a couple of different ways, then pacing the hallway of my home, I practiced. When I thought I finally had it down I dialed his number quickly before I lost my nerve. I pitched my invitation in an airy, off handed way... "So... after that discussion we had about the movie Schindler's List, I decided I'm going to go see it on Sunday. I wondered if maybe you'd like to go along?"

April 1994, after we'd been dating for about a month
There was a silence on his end, for probably a second or two, but from my perspective it was a LONG silence. I have since learned so much about my man, that I can now picture exactly the look on his face and hear the wheels turning in his head as he processed this seemingly out of the blue request.

Then, mercifully, he said yes.

And, the rest, as they say,  is history.

Loose Ends

  • Mom's surgical procedure for the skin cancer was taken care of Thursday. She has 12 stitches and did very well with the whole thing. We went to Walmart after for her prescriptions and she found a rocking chair in the baby furniture section to sit in while I ran around collecting a cart full of things I needed. She's a trooper. We go back in 2 weeks for stitch removal and follow up.

she's a trooper

  • Got a phone call from Mom's social worker about a lead on another assisted living place that is now taking medicaid. We have an appointment to tour it next week. I'm excited. Mom is not.

  • Hubby and I spent a productive day Wed. running errands, mostly in preparations for his mission trip. Immunizations, tools, etc. Just 2 weeks till he leaves. I have surrendered all roller-coastery type feelings to God and am moving forward as positively as I can.

  • Today we will also be running around... the baby needs new shoes. I mean Ruby Tuesday needs new shoes. I mean my car needs new tires. I'm excited for this to happen which tells you  a) how rough my car is driving with 2 bald tires. b) how dull my life is when I'm not working.

  • I am gaining confidence in using my new smart phone. I am starting to really like it. And possible I have lost some weight in my fingers.

learning how to use the camera AND post them to facebook. all while at work... shameless.

  • My camilla bush is blooming. My lawn desperately needs mowing. I washed my car in the sunshine yesterday. All definite signs that Spring has Sprung!

taken on Friday. will it bloom for Easter?

  • Last night I went to supper with friends and then on to Good Friday Worship Service. It was both solemn and joyous. Looking forward to Worship Sunday morning as we celebrate the full meaning of Resurrection Sunday and the Hope that is Christ Jesus.

Happy Easter! HE IS RISEN.

A Walk, A Talk and A Good Cup of Coffee

Yesterday was the first day I believed Spring was here.

Hubby and I headed into town to visit one of our favorite coffee house locations but it was just too perfect of a day to sit inside and drink our beverages. We took ours to-go and headed down the road in search of the trail head that would take us along the water front from downtown to one of our favorite little parks.

It was about a 2 mile trek one way and the sun was glistening over the bay as we walked.

We had much to talk about as we traversed. We'd met that morning after church with our pastor and his wife and another couple we love and respect to talk about hubby's upcoming mission trip and the impact it has had on our lives of late. I may be in a much different place than I was a month ago but I find I am still wrestling with feeling unsettled and emotional. Having our church family supporting us with their prayers and words of wisdom and encouragement means so very very much. We were both glad to have had the time to talk with them, listen to their good words and take some suggestions with us to mull over.

It was a near perfect day.

when it rains, play with pictures

despite the rain, perhaps because of the rain, I impulsively purchased some pansies today. I have always loved pansies. their friendly little faces, the way they bend in the rain, stretch in the sunshine, and come back year after year to replenish the landscape with their gentle vibrant colors.

i planted them in the rain today too, replenishing the sad little window box that lost it's primroses during the winter cold snap.

and after you plant a few flowers, you simply must take pictures. and after you take pictures you simply must play with them at picmonkey. I tell you this site is so much fun!

raining even as the sun shines
Thank you God for this beautiful day!

green thumbs of hope

rain... rain... and more rain.... this week has been a disappointment after the lovely weekend.

We did play and putter in the greenhouse this weekend though!

We ordered some seeds from a local company called Uprising Seeds. Just a few to start.

Cilantro, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, swiss chard...

we are planning to try some 'square foot gardening' this summer too.

we have green thumbs but not in the 'we can grow anything' way. more like green as in greenhorns who bumble through the planting process and learn lots about what NOT to do. LOL. We just have fun regardless of the outcome!!

this old door is just one of a few we have tucked away in the back storage area. And I have plans for them! I have an old wrought iron bed frame and some old windows. I would love to create some fun garden art with this stuff.  so we'll see what develops this summer.

meanwhile, today, even as the rain beats against my house and home, I feel like my cat who earlier this week did what I wish I could do today:
if I could find a little patch of sunshine, I would SO stretch out and nap!!!
