Honduran Tenacity

from Bruce, in Honduras, Week 3

Tenacious

One word I would use to describe the Hondurans of the Christian church here is “tenacious”.

In spite of living in an environment where the odds are stacked against them (no help from the government, oppression from the gangs, 60% unemployment), they appear to face each day with an attitude of commitment that says “Today will be a good day”.

We attended worship at Pastor Juan’s church last Monday night. This little building is perched high on a mountain side and has a sweeping view of Tegucigalpa  When we arrived, there was a small group of young men and boys playing soccer in the street on the only semi-level piece of land in the neighborhood.

There is no parking lot here that fills up with vehicles easing in and families spilling out. Here people arrive in small clusters, walking down and up the steep uneven mountainside to spend time in worship of the God that sustains them. Eventually 50 or so were present, standing or sitting on benches around the outside of this simple one-room church building. Two of them are a grandmother in her 80’s with a handicapped granddaughter in her 20’s. Worship begins at 4 so that no one will need to walk home in the dark. This hillside is under the oppression of the MS-13 gang and walking home in the dark is just asking for trouble.

The worship started with singing lead by Brother Juan playing amplified acoustic guitar and singing by his stout wife whose sincerity shown brightly through the language barrier. Everyone joined in and the singing was loud and strong with praise and thanksgiving. The singing leads to movement and movement leads to dancing and the raising of hands. The Spirit in that time of worship was thick. Because the people here have few options for coping with their situation. Join a gang perhaps, pay the taxes the gangs enforce, suicide. Or, run to the One who promises that even in the presence or our enemies he will restore us and provide his protection.

I have attached some pictures that, to me, represent the level of tenacity that I have witnessed here. It was on the third day of hand digging the footing trench for the church addition that it was decided to tackle this big 6-man boulder that had been dug around and ignored previously.

The ground here is a funky mix of dark gray clay mixed randomly with rocks of various sizes. It digs hard and you are constantly slowed down by the rocks along the way. And it’s hot, averaging 90 degrees.

Personally, I would have just left that boulder in place and poured concrete over it but the men here would not compromise. They took turns digging around its edges with a pick and bar  until it was lying completely exposed in the ditch and I am pondering, now what ?

There was no backhoe or other easy way of lifting this boulder out of the ditch. So again, as a team, they took turns slamming this boulder with an 8-pound sledge hammer. It took some time and advice from the older men about how and where to strike. Eventually chunk after chunk was broken away until this obstacle to our work success was small enough for two men to lift from the ditch and eventually used as fill beneath a new slab floor in the room we are building.

This whole rock busting episode I see as and analogy to the Christian Hondurans level of tenacity. Their obstacles to success are bigger than any one person, so they are succeeding by working together and incorporating God’s Wisdom in the course of facing their everyday challenges. And compromise is not what they are interested in.

It’s a privilege and great pleasure to personally experience this kind of living.
 Thank-you for your support,

            Bruce

God is on the Mountain!

What a spectacular day here in the Pacific NorthWest. Autumn has never been more glorious. We've been blessed with temps near the 70's which for October, in this area, is so very very rare! Usually we'd be donning rain coats and wool socks about now. Bruce and I are making the most of it by getting out every weekend, spending time together and in the amazing surroundings we are blessed enough to call home.

Sunday we hiked Winchester Mountain with a young couple from our church-- who are also part of our small group. What a delight. Both the company and the hike. Winchester Mountain is part of the North Cascades Mountain Range.  The jewels of this hike lay at the base of the mountain; Twin glacier fed lakes, deep and rich in color.

The hike is much like the road to get up there-- switchbacks, smooth and dusty in places, other areas are roughed in rubble and more than a little sketchy. As in 'don't look down'. We gained an elevation of about 1300 feet as we climbed through crimson carpets into delicate alpine, all encircled with a rough windswept look. The elevation at the top of the mountain, where the Fire Lookout is, is 6521. The hike is about 3.5-4 miles round trip.

We took our time following the meandering trail. Mike and Julie, our young companions, are fit and trim and could have easily left us in the dust. Respectfully they requested that we set the pace. I hope we didn't frustrate them!! I needed frequent rest stops, to catch my (gasping) breath, soak my parched lips and also to take pictures! Everywhere we looked, especially this time of the year, is postcard worthy.

We took a much needed cookie break at one point--Julie had brought fresh homemade Monster Cookies--and stepped aside often to let other trekker's pass us by. Everyone and their dog was out yesterday-- and why not? Again, it's a rare thing to have such warm dry weather this time of the year and it affords us the time to truly appreciate the rich color schemes so famous for fall.

Our conversation as we hiked was as rich as the scenery as we tackled such topics as science and God. Julie is graduating this month from WWU with her Masters in Geology and while I could never recall all the wonderful information she gifted us with over rock formations and such, it was still a treat to have her share her knowledge. Finding Christians in the science world can be a little rare, Julie told us. We talked about the debatable beliefs of how old the earth really is and how God and the Creation Story fit together with scientific proof of hundreds of thousands of years of existence.

While we certainly cannot claim to have all the final answers, what we did agree on were these simple facts: I am a sinner, I need a Savior. Jesus, son of God, died to save me and I believe it, accept it, and will now live for Him and His Glory. How God created our world and how long it took.... that is challenging and perhaps even fun to discuss but what really matters is how is my heart and my relationship with My Creator?

As we chewed  our cookies, we also chewed on things like how God is here with us now but He is also past and future. God is down in the valley but He is also at the same time, here on the mountain.

We picnicked at the top of Winchester, breathing in cool crisp air and views of Yellow Astor Butte, Lake Tomyhoi and Tomyhoi Mountain,  American Border Peak and Larrabee Mountain. And of course, towering over all of them, our majestic mountain: Mt. Baker. We paused for pictures and more geological coaching, history lessons and map reading.  And entwined with all of it was our Faith.

We came down with dusty tired feet and legs, sun kissed faces, and empty water bottles. But our hearts and minds were full. Full of memories made and lessons learned. Friendships deepened and our lives spiritually enriched.

White As Snow

so the other night, we are coming home from Alpha, (in kendall) and it is snowing like mad! those kind of 'white-out' conditions that make you loose your way in the middle of the road.... (where's the white line?!)

we made it home safely-- thank you Jesus-- and once we were parked in the garage, Bruce pointed out the interesting look the back of the car had!
what Ruby Tuesday would look like if she was a white haired/blond instead of a red-head?
I was struck with the thought of white-washed pharisees. I know, I know, what a strange thing to think of, but hang with me...

here is this car that is really red. But from certain positions, it looks white. Like some people we might know... not being authentic but trying to cover up things. it doesn't work.

in the morning, all the snow was melted from the car and it was ruby red again. if we go through life trying to fake it, eventually the facade crumbles and the truth comes out.

take another look....
then a second thought occurred to me.. a much nicer one!

When Jesus died for us, he did so to give us new life. When we accept Jesus' gift of salvation, we are immediately redressed-- in robes of righteousness! Pure, clean, fresh...

Looking at things in that light, I'd say, it looks beautiful.

A scripture comes to mind: though your sins be like scarlet, they shall be white as snow.... and THAT reminds me of a song I learned in sunday school....

Scarlet, scarlet,
Though your sins be scarlet,
They shall be white as snow in the precious blood,
Crimson, crimson,
Though your sins be crimson,
By the grace of God they shall be white as snow.
Calvary, Calvary,
Jesus went to Calvary,
There he died on the cross that we might be free,
Finished, finished,
Jesus cried "Tis Finished,
Now there's nothing left for me to do but come.

Personal Transformation

In my previous blog I wrote about Being Transformed by the Truth and said I would share about this on a personal level. Let me start by saying, this is a process for me and I am not always sure where in the process I fall. I do know that there have been numerous times the Holy Spirit has given me divine revelations that I, sadly, chose NOT to believe, therefore loosing the blessing God had intended for me.

But there have been times I have chosen to believe what the Lord has whispered to me in the stillness of my heart and those have been life giving moments for me.  Let me share about one of the earliest times...

step One; Receive Revelation: Tall Timber Ranch, March 1994. A church retreat and I am there as an 'extra' in a weekend retreat for the youth group. I came with no expectations, no responsibilities and no other agenda but to lose myself in the weekend and come back refreshed.
Well, God met me there in a way I had never experienced before. During a time of reflection and meditation on Psalm 23, as the leader read the words, "he restores my soul" something lept inside of me-- reverberated with in me. I knew in that instant that I had just heard the Lord speak to me. it was a Revelation!

Contemplation: As I prayed and reflected on this, I sought out what the Lord was trying to tell me through this. For a long time I had been nursing bitter hurts, broken places and deep wounds. I sensed the Lord was urging me to give Him those things... all of the pieces, once and for all. But it wasn't easy!

Wrestling with mind will and emotions: You bet I did. After all, those wounds were what defined me! Like a soldier with a Purple Heart, i had earned my battle wounds. Was I really ready to give them up? But I knew the only way to find peace and healing and RESTORATION was to let God have it. I made the decision to...

Choose to Believe:  in the instant that i stopped wrestling with these thoughts and surrendered it ALL, I experienced such a wave of peace. It was overwhelming in goodness and blessings. But the next step was to...

Stand on the Truth/Act on the command, which I may not have realized i was doing at the time but I had to confront the things that had brought me the pain in the first place. Sure I may have surrendered those things but was I going to leave them there at the feet of Jesus or was I going to reach out and reclaim them?(why we are so often tempted to pick those nasty ugly painful things back up I'll never understand. you would think we'd be so glad to be rid of them but still....)

I am happy to say that in spite of the temptations to slide right back into the old way of doing things, I stood firm and left those ugly hurts where they belonged! And the blessings began to flow!  As I clung to the balm in the blessings more healing occurred with in me. The more I healed the more the Truth was reinforced. The more the truth was reinforced, the more I healed. it was a sweet circle of blessing. It was a time in my life that I felt myself really growing in my walk with the Lord.

It was enough to hold me up when the testing of my belief came. Here was another time where i might have lost this battle and had another thing stolen from me but gosh, by this time I was really really tired of having the enemy steal even one more thing from me!! I hung on to that promise of restoration for my soul and now know that this is when the belief I held on to became a conviction! Praise God!!

since that time, the testings have come again and again and each time I am presented with a choice. Do I give in to the temptation to let the wounds of the past have their way with me or do I stand firm in the belief that the One who has given me restoration still reigns supreme?

the last few years i feel as if I may have slipped into some old patterns. I have had new hurts and disappointments that have really put me back. I realize that I lost some ground. the enemy stole my sunshine and stole my blessings because I temporarily forgot who's child I am. I forgot that MY DADDY has my back... and my front and my side and most perfectly my INSIDE. I am looking right now on this exercise and seeing the truths I neglected and need to reclaim. The revelation God gave me 16 years ago is once again being reinforced by a time of testing and experience.

Earlier today I was reflecting on some things and I thought i want to be able to say and mean it, "I"m back"       meaning the girl who was living with passion and conviction over several years, and then lost her way, has found her way back into living victorious....
And you know what? God is SO GOOD. He gives us the desires of our hearts when we ask for the things he so wants to give us! I feel like melted butter as I sit here soaking up the blessings of his grace and restoration.

so.... watch out world......   I'm back!!

Being Transformed by TRUTH

Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free... John 8.32

I would like to share something I recently learned at Dream Realization School about transformation. We hear so much about being transformed but it is a hard concept to fully grasp let alone implement. So I was excited to learn a process by which real transformation can take place as we claim the truth of what Jesus tells us.

the first step is
RECEIVING A REVELATION.
this would be something you receive from God. A word spoken perhaps as you read scripture or during prayer or something you come to understand as you listen to a sermon or other godly word. it may just strike you out of the blue as you are going along in life.. however it comes to you, it is something you understand to be a truth, a revelation that comes to you via the power of the Holy spirit.

next is
CONTEMPLATION
meditate on this revelation, think about it, pray about it....

you will probably then
WRESTLE WITH MIND, WILL AND EMOTIONS
as you work to understand it and process it and finally arrive at the point of...

CHOOSING TO BELIEVE....
(OR CHOOSING NOT TO BELIEVE
when we choose to not believe, this is where growth stops.... where the blessing God intended for you is stolen by satan.)

If you chose to BELIEVE then the next step is to
ACT ON THE COMMAND... STAND ON THE TRUTH (get out of the boat, walk on the water, live in faith )

once you do that then comes an
INITIAL BLESSING
we like those! BLESSING always follows obedience to God. Everytime we say yes to a revelation from God , He brings blessings... AND more revelations!

the next thing that takes place is seeing the
TRUTH REINFORCED.

this is followed by a time of
TESTING OF BELIEF
Sure as shooten', when you make a decision to be obedient to God you will be tested!

this is a crucial time just as choosing to believe was... because if the testing time damages or steals your belief... growth stops, blessings stop.... in other words you short circuit the works of God by not following the word of God.
but if you hang in there, hold on firm to that belief thru the time of testing then a great thing happens!

BELIEF BECOME CONVICTION
And, it's conviction-- not belief-- that changes you!

wow, this is followed by what...? Oooh!

MORE BLESSINGS VIA FAITH/OBEDIENCE
Obedience unlocks God's power!!

next...
CONVICTION DEEPENS; SHARED BY BLESSING OTHERS.
when we truly believe... and are convicted by our belief, we can't help but share that with others! and when we do this, we also share our blessings.... which in turn blesses them!

REVELATION REINFORCED BY EXPERIENCE/TESTING.
ahh, its that testing time again but if you have hung in there during the first time of testing, you know you can do it again and as you do you grow and grow in the assurance and knowledge that God is in control. God is good. God is sovereign.  which again allows you to know...

GREAT BLESSINGS TO YOU AND OTHERS!

this unfolds in a
NEW RING OF GROWTH!

When our life experience outweighs what we know of God, what happens? We loose our footing, we loose our faith. We need to NOT base our theology on our life experiences. If I did that I would be a bitter, angry, fearful woman missing out on all kinds of growing opportunities! Instead, we need to base our understanding of life and God though His holy revelations.

Tune in next time when I will try to tell my own personal experience of seeing this ring of growth in my own life!

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the council of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the lay of the Lord and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield is fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. whatever he does prospers. Ps 1. 1-3

~the little pencil~

I'm just a little pencil in the hands of God, writing a love letter to the world" ~Mother Teresa

Wow, I really like that. But what does that mean in reality? In my reality? What would that look like?---if I was a little pencil in the hands of God? would what I'm writing really read like a love letter?

if I was a little pencil... how often would I need to be sharpened? how often would the eraser get used? what kind of a pencil would God  use? a #2?   I'm not trying to be funny.... I'm actually getting into this... deep, theologically and I haven't even been to the dump! (reference for those who wouldn't know: Bruce and I often have dump dates-- that is we take a trip to the dump to dump junk-- and we end up having some of our deeper conversations)

I think i need sharpening often! daily... and how do i best sharpen my pencil but with time in the Word and in Prayer. I have had a pretty dull pencil the last few days. I have neglected time alone with God.

if i was a pencil in the hands of God,  then would I need an eraser? sometimes I sure would like to be able to erase some of the things I said!

But, if I am really truly a little pencil in the hands of God, I need to allow him to write the love letter. When God writes, he doesn't need the eraser.

I think I need to work on being the pencil.

Last Sunday and today, we were prayed for in church as a blessing and commissioning before we leave on our trip. Last Sunday Pastor Dean was there and he brought us up to the front and prayed over us. Today it was Pastor Steve, and he invited anyone who wanted to come forward and lay hands on us and pray. What a sweet privilege to be blessed in this way. What an honor we have to be called to serve Christ.

I felt especially blessed today because my dear friend Sandy was among the people who came forward.  Sandy is such an example to me of what a woman lost in God looks like. Her whole face shines with the peace of Christ. Her spirit is sweet and her heart is true. I can only hope and pray that I can reflect even a small portion of that to the people I come in contact with.

Today's message was about Christ healing the hurts in us. What a testimony i can give to how the Holy Spirit has brought about healing in me.  I wrote on my facebook wall about feeling blessed, thankful healed and whole and only my Jesus can do that.  18-20 years ago, I would have never been able to say that.  I was so broken and crushed in spirit, so beaten down and full of pain... the walls I had so carefully constructed to protect myself I thought were firmly in place yet, the facade was just that-- a facade--  fragile and it so easily could crumble. Yet, look! Look where the Lord has brought me!  He made some thing beautiful of my life.... you know there's a song there....

(the Gaithers:) Something beautiful, something good, all my confusion, He understood, All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife, but He made something beautiful of my life.

Even 8-9 years ago, when we went on our first out of country missions trip to Costa Rica, I was a fearful, reluctant participant. I went, excited, but really in bondage from the fear and insecurities I carried.  I am still a little fearful over this trip, but the fear comes from a completely different place. Maybe calling it fear is even the wrong word. I have questions, I have concerns, i have wonders, I have nervousness and actually the fear is the good kind; the kind that comes from AWE...  not from something bad or wrong or evil.

But this time I am excited and looking forward to the experience, the chance to connect with women who have their own baggage of hurts and oppressions. An opportunity to love on them and share with them from the heart, that as daughters of the King of Kings, we are royalty, we are princesses. that there is hope in Christ. that we can be made whole. Healed and Whole.

MIke, one of the team members also shared in church this morning about the healing the Lord has done in his life. Awesome!  This trip is going to be so cool and the people we are traveling with are a part of that.

That Bruce and I get to experience this together is the best! I look over at him during church and my heart swells with the thrill and knowledge that we are in this together. (and here I am referring to the trip and having CTK in Deming)  Wow, its been  just an awesome awesome time and it's only the beginning!!  :)
