SHARING
Freely giving out what we freely received keeps us filled even as we are giving out.
Proverbs 11:25 : Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed
Luke 6:30-38 Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.... Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
I love the image this verse gives: pressed down, shaken together, making room for more... running over, poured into your lap.... What a beautiful wonderful image of God's grace, love and mercy!
One of the first rules we ever learned in Life Lessons 101:SHARE. Some of us are naturally better at it than others. I think our first inclination in the world view sense is to hoard. Hoard our time, hoard our resources. We think if we give it away we will lose.
But the world has it backwards. When we give it away-- freely, we get back more than we ever imagined! As we share, we receive. it's the wonder of God's economy.
Grasping this concept can be a hard one, but it is in doing so that our hearts are changed forever and our faith grows and the way we see things and the way we think, shifts into thinking and seeing more through the God filter.
I can't tell you how many times I hear from people (myself included) who go on a mission trip, fully expecting to deliver something to the people they intend to minister to, only to come home blown away by how much they were blessed in the experience. It is I who was blessed, I who received, when I thought I was going to be a blessing, to give away something.
Two songs for today's lesson... one from my childhood, one from today's hot top ten.
Freely, Freely
He said: 'Freely, freely, you have received
Freely, freely give
Go in My name, and because you believe
Others will know that I live.'
